Kiosks of Athens

This project, commissioned by the Municipality of Athens, was a preliminary phase aimed at reimagining the iconic Athenian kiosks, or “periptera,” which are a cherished symbol of the city. The term “periptero” originates from ancient Greek architecture, referring to a temple surrounded by a perimetrical colonnade. Over time, the modern kiosk has evolved, often becoming cluttered with refrigerators, displays, and various merchandise, which create a sprawl around the primary structure rather than a cohesive, organized form.

Our brief was to redefine this “classic” kiosk by drawing inspiration from models in cities like Paris and Istanbul, using contemporary materials and methods to develop a series of distinct yet cohesive kiosk typologies. These new designs needed to honor Greek aesthetic traditions while serving the modern functions of kiosks. The result was a versatile and unified system that includes various types—from fixed kiosks to mobile units, food carts, and press stands—all linked by a shared architectural language that evokes a contemporary Greek identity.
